Scratch the Surface

If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The act of reading involves understanding the meaning of written words. It involves the imagination and the emotions as well as the brain’s capacity for logic, memory and of course language use and acquisition. Through reading, you expose yourself to new things, new information, new ways to solve a problem, and new ways to achieve one thing. Reading is fundamental to functioning in today’s society. Reading exposes you to a world of imagination, showing you nothing is impossible in this world. By reading, you are exploring a different angle to see a thing you’ve known, on how different action leads to different results.

Reading is an exercise in empathy; an exercise in walking in someone else’s shoes for a while. — Malorie Blackman

Reading transports us into the minds of others and helps us to develop our empathy. Studies have shown that people who read a lot tend to be more empathetic than people who are not keen readers. Reading helps us to see the world through other people’s eyes.

Reading keeps us connected, keeps us informed, and keeps us happy. When we read, we value knowledge for its own sake, not its monetary worth. It is our gateway to knowledge, and a way of making the historical past come back to life. Both an everyday skill and a philosophical pursuit, reading pervades all aspects of our lives.
